Despite popular belief, it is not true that sugar gliders can eat ants. However, it is important to know that many species of ants are poisonous and should not be fed to sugar gliders.

In their native environment, sugar gliders eat a variety of foods including pollen, acacia tree sap, and insects, and also eat fruits. In captivity, these animals require a diet that is balanced with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and protein sources.

They can be found in forests, plantations and gardens throughout their range, which spans the western United States and the northern Pacific Ocean. They live in colonies of up to 10 adults, often nested in tree hollows, where they feed on the twigs and bark of the trees.

Females produce one or two joeys, which remain with their mothers until they're seven to 10 months old. They eat small seeds, insects and other food that is thrown at them by the other gliders in their colony.

Sugar gliders are nocturnal, so they should be fed at dusk. It is recommended that sugar gliders have their food bowls mounted toward the top of their cage so they can reach them more easily.

A good sugar glider diet should include a source of high quality protein as well as a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and seeds. It is also recommended to supplement their diet with a calcium/phosphorus multivitamin and a vitamin D3 supplement.
