The answer to this question depends on your glider’s dietary needs. Some sugar gliders are omnivores and will eat any type of food they can get their mouths on, but most have specific diet requirements.
Wild sugar gliders are primarily an insectivore, but they consume sap, gum, honeydew and pollen in addition to insects. They also chew on the bark of trees to extract tree sap.
A small percentage of their diet is made up of proteins, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Protein must represent at least 50% of their diet (some authors recommend up to 75%).
Fruits and vegetables are important parts of a healthy diet, but they should be fresh and not canned or frozen as many have added sugars and preservatives that are harmful to sugar gliders. Be sure to rinse them well, cut them into bite-sized pieces and remove any seeds before serving.
Vegetables are high in protein, calcium and phosphorus. These can include sweet potatoes, broccoli, green beans, carrots, kale and cauliflower.
Be careful with fruit and vegetables that are high in oxalate as these are more difficult for gliders to digest. Be sure to give your sugar gliders plenty of oxalate-free vegetables and fruit such as apples, bananas, kiwifruit, pears and melons.
Gliders should not be allowed to eat any plants that are toxic to them, such as onions, garlic, scallions and chives. These plants are found in the Alliaceae family and contain the phenols that can cause irritation of the lungs. Other common plants that can be toxic to sugar gliders are holly, azalea and mistletoe.
