In the wild, these cute marsupials have a membrane that connects their ankles and wrists (similar to a flying squirrel). They can be very sweet eaters and love to munch on fresh fruits and vegetables.
They can also eat some human treats, such as cookies and doughnuts. However, sugar gliders should not be fed these treats regularly as they can cause obesity and other health problems if they are overfed.
Candy, cookies and other treats can be harmful to sugar gliders as they contain too much sugar, which can stress out their digestive system and lead to obesity. Rather, they should be given fresh fruit and vegetables in moderation.
Chocolate shouldn’t be fed to sugar gliders because it contains theobromine, a substance that can be toxic to these tiny creatures. In addition, chocolate has a high sugar and fat content which can lead to obesity in sugar gliders if it’s overfed.
Dried dog and cat food is fine for sugar gliders as it is similar in taste and texture to pelleted foods and can provide them with all the nutrients they need. It’s important though that the amount of this dried food you give is small so as not to overfeed them and cause them to become overweight.
They can also eat some fresh plants in the garden, including clover, dandelion flowers, honeysuckle, rose and squash or cucumber flowers. But they should not be exposed to pesticides or fertilizers, as this can kill them.
